Best tool for read/write EDC17 via OBD?

Question: I’m wondering if there’s a way to remap my ECU without having to take it out the car and boot it on the bench. I’ve seen some articles about CMD flash but I wasn’t sure how far along that technology is? What are remapping companies using on the Tricore ECU?

Answer: There are quite a few derivatives of the EDC17. Bench tuning for the majority and probably the best way to tune as we fully backup the ECU including eeprom etc

Here are some solutions of EDC17…. Enjoy! Good luck!

  • For EDC16 i am using BDM100from china.
  • I USE FGTECH 54AND IS OK. no problem.
  • I read one EDC17 in Audi A4 with MPPS v16.
  • Another EDC17 I read in boot mode with galletto v54good china clone… Do job perfectly.
When you have problem, just try this way: uninstall all fgtech software. Install basic version. Connect tool and give drivers. Unplug tool. Remove basic. Install Win7 version. Plug tool + drivers. Done.
  • I use the kess reworked pcb and fw updated, like 08 what is available…is great tool, recently KESS FM V4.036available, haven’t test it, but I think it will do. As told by eobd2.fr customer service, the older fw kess v2 is available to update firmware by returning back the main unit to them and charge $89, but the QC number has to be ended with 015.
  • I use byteshooter does most ecus obd2, inclusively edc17 first models until 2009, first generation. For late edc17 byteshooter reads very good on table, only resistor adding is needed. If you want good tool go Byteshoter. Never had issues with it. Galetto v54 reworked pcb works good too.
  • CMD CAN Flasherdont can read write all edc17 by obd, only a few.

MPPS V16 Remap Audi A3 ECU diagnostic case

MPPS V16 is very easy to use. Here is a quick guide on remapping Audi A3 ECU with the tool. The whole process takes about 8 to 10 minutes. Before we start please note that there is risk in ECU reflashing, be careful in every step in order not to break your ECU.
Tools you will need:
1. A XP laptop or a Windows 7 laptop with XP mode package (because MPPS V16 clone is only compatible with XP system.)
2. MPPS V16 ECU reflasher
Quick guide:
1) Plug MPPS to the OBD port under the dashboard on the Audi A3 vehicle and connect the other end of it to a laptop that has MPPS V16 software.

2) Start the laptop, the car and then the MPPS V16 application software.
3) Hit "ECU ID (F1)" at the bottom right on the interface.
4) Select the language that you want to use on the upper right side. Here I select English, you can use French if you prefer.

7) Be sure the ignition is on, and then hit "Read (F2)" to allow MPPS reading ECU information from the car. Once the data is read, it will pop up in “ECU Data” area.
8) A window will then pops up asking you where to save the file. Do as it prompts.
9) MPPS will then ask you to turn off the ignition key and wait for a few seconds. Click "OK" after switching off the key.
10) Switch on the key to continue. Lights on the dashboard will come off together and then go off one by one.
11) Turn on the key again.
12) Click on "Write (F3)" to start ECU remapping.
13) MPPS will ask you to switch off the key to continue in a few minutes.
14) Click "OK".
When you hear a "ding" sound, it means the ECU remapping is finished. Disconnect MPPS V16 from the car and unplug the cable.
